Yes, through the phone. Apple CarPlay shows Apple Maps and Google Maps; Android Auto shows Google Maps and Waze. The screen is a display, so if the app runs on your phone and supports CarPlay or Android Auto, it appears on the bars.
Why it matters
This is the practical reason most people want the screen: a phone on a mount is hard to read in sun and impossible with gloves. Maps on a fixed screen at eye level is the whole purchase.

Does it need a phone signal?
The map tiles do; you can download offline areas in Google Maps before a trip, which is what most riders do in the mountains.
Can I use Waze?
On Android Auto, yes. CarPlay does not offer Waze in the same way, which is worth knowing if Waze is your app.
